The Justice Department is expected to announce the indictment of longtime Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, on Friday, two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News. It wasn't immediately clear if the indictment was related to the 2022 raid. A year after the raid — which had not previously yielded arrests or charges — Cuellar told the Texas Tribune: "There has been no wrongdoing on my part. Despite the raid, Cuellar narrowly defeated a progressive challenger, Jessica Cisneros, in his 2022 primary and went on to win re-election to his seat that November. A member of the centrist Blue Dogs and New Democrat Coalition, Cuellar was first elected to the House in 2004.

Ideological battles among House Republicans are not a new phenomenon on Capitol Hill. But in recent years, conservative frustrations have boiled over, leading to the actual ouster of a GOP speaker. President Bill Clinton, right, shakes hands with House Speaker Newt Gingrich at the US Capitol on January 24, 1995. And the next Republican speaker, even a lawmaker as conservative as Jordan, will also have to navigate those choppy waters. House Republicans over the past 30 years could largely spare a few defections during the times when it held the majority, but with the current majority being so close, it no longer has that luxury.

Rep. Jared Golden was one of just two Democrats who voted with the GOP to block Biden's student-debt relief in June. The Blue Dog Coalition, which Golden co-chairs, recently received a maximum contribution from student lender Sallie Mae. But Golden wrote in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that Sallie Mae's contribution did not sway his beliefs on student-debt relief. The Education Department is currently in the process of finalizing a new student-debt relief plan using the Higher Education Act. Meanwhile, other Democratic lawmakers are continuing to push for relief for borrowers — especially with the student-loan payment pause ending in September.

As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said herself, quoting scripture on the House floor Thursday: “For everything there is a season — a time for every purpose under heaven.”For Pelosi, the season to be leader of House Democrats has passed. She’ll continue to represent San Francisco while serving as an invaluable source of guidance and resolve for the next generation of House Democratic leaders. At 82, Pelosi is a historic figure, of course: the first female House speaker and one of the strongest speakers, if not the strongest, that America has ever seen. Yet as a minority in a GOP-run House, Democrats won’t be able to rack up accomplishments like they did in the last two years. There were calls for Pelosi to step aside in 2010 when Democrats lost 60 House seats — a true wipeout.

Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger narrowly held onto her seat in Virginia on Tuesday, defeating Republican Yesli Vega in a contest both parties saw as an early bellwether in the battle for the House. NBC News has not yet projected the outcome in a second closely watched Virginia race, where Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria was battling Republican state Sen. Jen Kiggans. But the political survival of Spanberger, a prominent player among the small band of moderate Blue Dog Democrats, counted as a welcome burst of good news for Democrats relatively early on election night. She made waves after the 2020 election when she blamed her party’s left flank for losses in the House, arguing that calls to “defund” law enforcement cost seats. Vega, a member of the Prince William board of county supervisors, served as a police officer before entering politics.
